Modernising airspace for flexibility, safety, efficiency and resilience
UK airspace will look very different in a few years from now. Even before COVID-19 we were seeing huge changes, including the introduction of space based ADS-B providing satellite coverage of the North Atlantic, allowing flights to be tracked every 3 seconds, compared to the 14 minute check-ins under the previous radio-based tracking system.
We’re also seeing many new airspace users, which means finding new ways of working together to use the sky safely and in harmony. To meet these challenges, air traffic controllers need new tools and technologies to increase flexibility, and improve safety, efficiency and resilience.
We are committed to developing and implementing innovative solutions that deliver benefits now and into the future. But we cannot do this alone, we need the stimulus of partners, universities and enterprising start-ups to help us think differently.
