Airspace users

Opening the skies to new types of users

Introduction

Flying taxis, all-electric aircraft, drone deliveries, even commercial space travel... they are not so far away.  We are already working on modernising the UK’s airspace to enable access for new types of vehicles, which also means changing the way we manage the airspace.

Safely integrating different airspace users, rather than segregating them as we’ve done in the past, is the key to unlocking the next era of aviation, while maintaining and enhancing safety standards.

The challenge on us, therefore, is to evolve the airspace into a single expanse with access determined by the technological capability of the vehicles wanting to use it – and users’ understanding of the role they play in keeping themselves and others safe.
